Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return

Abstract
Total anomalous pulmonary venous return is a congenital defect resulting in the connection of all of pulmonary veins to the right atrium or its tritutary veins. As a result the entire systemic and pulmonary venous return enters the right side of the heart.
The clinical picture presented by patients represents a broad spectrum which varies from the severely ill, cyanotic newborn infant to the less cyanotic and minimally disabled adult.
The diagnosis is made on the combination of clinical picture, chest-X-ray, electrocardiographic appearances and echocardiographic findings. Cardiac catheterization and selective angiocardiography from the pulmonary artery provide the best means of conforming and refining the clinical diagnosis.
The overall picture of life expectancy is a grime one and survival beyond infancy is the exception.
Management in most instances must be surgical.
